Most of us take our daily lives for granted. For example, we have the ability to see, hear, walk, and talk, yet some people do not have these talents.
Living without the ability to see is arguably the worst of all of these things. The straightforward beauty of a green field or a blue sky. We can’t fathom our lives without these gems.
That is why we found this narrative so fascinating. Nicolly Pereira, who is only two years old, has spent her entire life unable to see or hear her mother. She had many procedures in Brazil, but none were successful.
After Nicolly’s mother, Diana Pereira, shared her story on Facebook, a campaign to discover a means to give her the ability to sight was established. And the results were… well, incredible!
According to the Miami Herald, Nicolly was diagnosed with Childhood Glaucoma shortly after birth. The physicians were convinced that she couldn’t even see light and that she would have to spend the rest of her life in the dark.
However, after hearing Diana’s tale on Facebook, a Miami Herald reader contacted the Jackson Health Foundation, which collaborated with Kevin Garcia’s company. Nicolly’s surgery cost $17,000, which the two charities were able to cover.
After the surgery, which lowered the pressure in her eyes from 50 to 12 (the typical level for youngsters is between 10 and 20), the day came to see if the procedure was effective.
We observe young Nicolly crying violently in a moving video captured right after the bandages were removed. But she relaxes when the doctors remove the bandages from her eyes. For the first time in her life, she is able to see!
Naturally, she was perplexed for the first few seconds, but then she saw her mother, Diana, and everything changed…
