Each child deserves to be surrounded by love and care, irrespective of their unique characteristics that set them apart from other children.
It’s essential for every child to be accepted by society. Special needs should not hinder these children from growing up alongside their peers, playing, and having typical childhood experiences.
Parents of children with conditions like autism understand the challenges of caring for a unique child, as it can be quite demanding. They make every effort to help their children integrate into society. However, not everyone is forgiving or kind, even some unexpected individuals, like in the case of a priest.
Cristian, a 10-year-old boy with autism, is a good example. His parents, Daniele and Monia, are determined to ensure that their son has a normal upbringing. Cristian was supposed to participate in his first communion ceremony with children of his age.
Yet, during the rehearsal, the priest decided that Cristian should receive communion separately in the sacristy on a different day to avoid potentially disturbing others during the ceremony.
The priest, who officiated at a church in Abruzzo, Italy, suggested to Cristian’s parents that they should bring him on another day, despite knowing about the boy’s autism.
When they explained the situation to the priest, he emphasized that everyone is equal before God. Consequently, after seeing Cristian’s behavior during the rehearsal, the priest had a change of heart.
Cristian’s first communion eventually took place in a different church, with several attendees. During the ceremony, people offered support to the boy and his parents.
