Kimberly and Brad Moore constructed a customized wheelchair for their seven-month-old daughter, Evelyn, when they realized they couldn’t wait for one. They followed an online guide and the project cost them approximately $100.
At just four months old, Evelyn developed a spinal tumor and was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, resulting in paralysis from the arms down. Thankfully, she later went into remission.
Despite medical advice to wait until Evelyn turned two for her own wheelchair, her parents were determined not to delay, and now they have a makeshift wheelchair at home.
Evelyn’s mother describes her as fearlessly maneuvering in her wheelchair, which was fashioned from a cutting board, caster wheels, and a Bumbo chair. Evelyn quickly mastered its operation.
Pediatric oncologist Bev Wilson noted that Evelyn is a cheerful child. She constantly moves around, visiting nurses and greeting other children. She’s just like any other child, only faster.
Several times a week, Evelyn is supported by a harness and uses a treadmill, which has helped her enhance her bladder control, boost her immune system, and gradually gain more control of her lower body.
Kimberly and Brad are dedicated to providing Evelyn with a typical childhood. While they face many challenges, Evelyn remains content and continues to grow healthier each day.
