In an unexpected turn of events, Simon Marks, a 37-year-old homeowner, recently uncovered a secret buried beneath his driveway that left him astounded and intrigued. Little did he know, the place he had called home for years held a historical secret waiting to be revealed.
It all started on an ordinary day when Marks attempted to park his car in his driveway, expecting nothing out of the ordinary. However, as he maneuvered his vehicle, an unusual obstacle caught his attention—a seemingly innocuous flowerbed that proved to be far from ordinary.

Together, they meticulously excavated the densely-packed mud, revealing an opening beneath. To their astonishment, an old, rusty ladder awaited them below, beckoning them to descend into the unknown.
Marks recounted the experience, saying, “My dad saw it and instantly said it’s an air raid shelter. We googled it and found there are quite a few in this area.”
Their newfound knowledge pointed to a remarkable piece of history—the shelter they had stumbled upon in Marks’ garden dated back to World War II. Marks speculated, “The previous owner must have known it was there and when he built the house and put a garden in… he must have filled it in.”
These air raid shelters were designed to provide protection from bombings during the war, a testament to human resilience in the face of adversity and the invention of Sir John Anderson.
As they explored further, they encountered a bricked-up wall, leading Marks to comment, “One of the walls has been bricked up. I’m 90 percent sure we won’t find out any more rooms, but we don’t know. They might have bricked up one of the walls when the house was built to make way for the foundations. If that’s the case, we’ll just have to leave it.”
